Massage therapy isn't just for humans any more!  Many companion animals (dogs and cats) are receiving the health benefits provided by regular massage therapy. Recently massage therapy has experienced a resurgence in popularity. People are concerned with side effects and other problems caused by medication and other invasive treatments. This applies not only to ourselves, but the animals who share our lives.  Massage has ancient roots and has been used as part of holistic healing for centuries.  It is non-invasive and safe to use and promotes general relaxation and well-being in addition to specific therapeutic benefits.

Animals, like humans have interdependent musculo-skeletal systems.  When there is a problem with the soft tissue (muscle) or the structural element (a skeletal bone) pain and dysfunction can result.  Since we want to maintain the health and well-being of our animals, it becomes important to notice when something may be amiss.
Age, injury, and repetitive motions often cause musculoskeletal issues. Sometimes the dysfunction is a result of genetic disorder, as with hip or elbow dysplasia. Older animals are prone to arthritis, particularly if they have had a very active or very sedentary lifestyle.  Dogs that jump up and down from vehicles and on and off of furniture often strain joints and muscles in the back and limbs.  This can be particularly painful for dogs that have a long back or are overweight.  It is important to identify these habitual actions as being potentially harmful in the long term, and making provisions to keep the animal from over straining.  Access ramps for vehicles are very helpful and should be used regularly.  Likewise, in the house, step stools or miny-stairs help small animals access furniture without placing tremendous force on their joints.  These ramps and stair stools can be found in most animal supply stores and catalogs.

Animals receive the same benefits from massage that humans do.  Whether it is arthritis, recovering from surgery, or preventative health maintenance, massage helps to reduce pain and stiffness in the muscle.  It  reduces tension and inflamation of the  tissue. It helps promote natural relaxation and rest. It stimulates circulation of the blood and lymph systems, helping to promote faster healing and removal of toxins from the body.  It improves mobility and range of motion, and releases endorphins, promoting a feeling of well-being.
Massage is a safe, non-invasive means to provide animals with reduced pain thereby improving the quality of their life.  It is an affordable option to pain medication, and has no known side effects.
