Top Five Reasons to Attend Clinics
and Events in Your Discipline
|
 |
|
Whether you are a beginner or seasoned
professional, attending clinics is an important part continuing your education. Each clinician has something to offer, whether
it is a brand new idea or tip, or just rephrasing a concept in a particular way that is illuminating for you personally. Often
professional instructors or trainers will learn new ways to express ideas that help their students 'get it'. Sometimes
its reassuring to see that others struggle with some of the same challenges we have.

Seeking qualified
educators that meet your particular training needs. When you are new to the sport or discipline, or havehad a negative experience,
it can be hard to find a new trainer who is a good fit with your needs and goals. Clinics are a great opportunity to
see a wide variety of professionals to compare and contrast their styles and temperments. This is a great way to 'try out'
a new trainer without making a long term commitment. Always be looking around at the auditors - often they are instructors
brushing up or networking.

Opportunities to meet top
professionals in the field you're interested in. Often clinics feature Q&A or meet and greets. This is a great
way to network with the expert clinician and others who are attending the event. Trainers often accompany amateur or
youth riders, so there are plenty of people to talk to if you are looking for help. Clinics are also a great networking
opportunity for professionals in the field. Sometimes great business connections can be made at these events -
anything from service swaps to buying/ selling horses, or co-sponsoring an event or activity ofyour own. Getting
inspired. Attending clinics, meeting new people, exchanging ideas, having that eureka moment, watching riders' progress
are all very inspirational. Sometimes it is easy to get into a training rut. Clinics are usual high energy events
- people are there because they want to be, because they are passionate about their sport. Just being in this atmosphere
can help shake you out of the doldrums. When you're also armed with new information and new contacts, the results can be inspirational.
I challenge you to attend an upcoming clinic and see for yourself!

Helping to grow the discipline in
your area. I am an advocate of attending every clinic or educational event possible. Not only for all of the good
reasons above, but because it is important to support the discipline, sport, and industry. If attendance at events is
consistently low, it becomes harder and harder to attract big name experts to your area. Once this begins to happen,
the chances of growing and improving the level of the sport become fewer. Even in these challenging economic times,
auditing is an inexpensive way to come out and show your support of your industry, network, learn, make new contacts, pick
up new ideas.
